A Local Favorite Photo Location For Candid And Relaxed Family Photography Along The Santa Barbara Coastline.

Tucked above the ocean cliffs on the Mesa, this location is peaceful, open, and very Californian. It’s one of those places locals know and love for sunset walks with their furry friends, coastal sunset views, and slow park picnics outside, but many visitors coming to Santa Barbara have never even heard of it. That beautiful and relaxed atmosphere is what makes it so beautiful for family photography.

As a documentary and editorial family photographer in Santa Barbara, I’m always looking for locations that allow families to move naturally instead of standing stiffly in one place. Douglas Family Preserve creates that experience so easily. Children can run through the open paths, parents can hold hands and walk together enjoying the views, and the entire session feels more like spending intentional time together than posing for photos.

One of my favorite things about this location is the variety it offers without requiring much walking or multiple stops. Within one session, we can capture:

  • soft golden coastal light

  • ocean cliff views

  • earthy natural trails

  • eucalyptus trees

  • open grassy areas for movement

  • intimate candid moments

The light here during golden hour is especially beautiful. Santa Barbara sunsets tend to create a soft glow that photographs beautifully on skin tones while still preserving the natural coastal colors that make this area feel timeless and cinematic. For families with younger children, this location also tends to feel less overwhelming than busier beaches or heavily trafficked tourist areas. Kids usually warm up quickly because there’s space to explore the park, all the different trails and observe wildlife.

My Signature Approach to Family Photography in Santa Barbara

What I love most about family photography in Santa Barbara is creating sessions that feel centered around connection, movement, and genuine interaction rather than perfectly staged portraits.

Over the years and photographing over two hundred families all around the USA and Europe, I’ve learned that the most meaningful family photographs rarely come from asking everyone to stand still and smile perfectly at the camera for an entire hour. The images families end up loving most are usually the in-between moments — the way your child reaches for your hand, the laughter after a joke, the movement of everyone walking together, or the quiet moments that naturally unfold when people feel comfortable enough to simply be themselves - and this is exactly why I call my photography an experience, and not a photoshoot because I go beyond and above creating a memorable experience leading up to the session, during and beyond.

That’s one of the biggest reasons I love photographing families at Douglas Family Preserve. Unlike crowded beaches like Butterfly Beach in Montecito or Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara, Douglas Family Reserve allows us to create freely without constantly worrying about crowds, lack of space, or feeling rushed. The openness of the preserve creates an environment where children can naturally explore, move around, and stay engaged throughout the session.

For kids especially, this makes a huge difference.

The session becomes less about standing still for photos and more about interactive connection and play. Children are able to walk the trails, run through open grassy areas, explore nature, cuddle with parents or their siblings, and stay emotionally engaged instead of feeling pressured into forced smiling. As someone who has photographed hundreds of families, couples, and weddings over the years, I’ve found that this relaxed approach consistently creates photographs that feel far more authentic, emotional, and timeless.

That doesn’t mean there’s no direction involved.

I still guide every session intentionally — from positioning families in the best light, to helping with movement, composition, connection, and subtle prompts that create natural interaction. I pay close attention to family dynamics and each person’s personality throughout the session so the experience feels personalized rather than templated.

Some families are playful and energetic. Some are quieter and more intimate. Some children want to run freely while others need a slower, gentler approach. My role is understanding those dynamics and creating an experience where everyone feels comfortable enough for real moments to happen naturally. That balance between gentle direction and authentic interaction is what creates the candid, editorial, and emotionally connected imagery that so many families are searching for — and often have a difficult time finding.

Combining Douglas Family Preserve & Hendry's Beach in One Photography Session

One of the biggest hidden advantages of choosing Douglas Family Preserve for your family photos is how close it is to Hendry’s Beach. The two locations are only about a five-minute drive apart, which means families can experience two completely different coastal backdrops within the same session without spending much time transitioning between locations.

This combination is honestly one of the most underrated photography pairings in Santa Barbara.

We can begin the session at Douglas Family Preserve with natural green walking paths, grassy open landscapes, cliffside scenery and soft documentary-style movement through beautiful light coming through the trees. Then finish the session at Hendry’s Beach with sandy shoreline photos, playful candid moments near the water, barefoot walking portraits and warm coastal golden hour light photographs. For visiting families especially, it’s a beautiful way to experience multiple sides of Santa Barbara in one evening.

Best Time for a Portrait Session in Santa Barbara

I almost always recommend scheduling sessions during golden hour, usually about 60–90 minutes before sunset. One of the unique things about photographing in Santa Barbara is that the light and weather shift quite a bit throughout the year — summer sunsets happen much later in the evening, winter light disappears earlier, and coastal conditions like the marine layer can completely change the atmosphere of a session. Fall often brings the clearest golden light, while late spring and early summer can create softer foggy coastal moods. Part of my role is helping families choose the best timing, lighting conditions, and overall flow based on the season, weather patterns, and location combinations.

Since ideal lighting windows and sunset timing change throughout the year, I always recommend reaching out early for recommendations and bookings.

What to Wear for Family Photos in Santa Barbara

Because the landscape is naturally earthy and coastal, I usually recommend neutral tones, soft creams, linen textures, warm earthy colors, flowing fabrics with movement. Avoiding large logos or overly bright neon colors helps keep the images feeling timeless and cohesive. I also help all of my clients with outfit guidance and provide color palette for all of my clients before the session so everything photographs well together and matches with the location of your choice.

A Beautiful Location for Both Locals & Visitors

For locals, it captures a side of Santa Barbara that feels authentic and personal to their story. For visitors, it creates photographs that still feel deeply connected to the California coastline without photographing in heavily crowded tourist areas. Many families visiting Santa Barbara for vacations, anniversaries, reunions, or weekend getaways choose to document this chapter of life together while they’re here — and locations like Douglas Family Preserve help preserve that feeling perfectly.

Planning Your Family Session in Santa Barbara

I help guide families through the entire process — from choosing the best timing for light and coastal conditions to outfit recommendations, location planning, helping children feel comfortable, and creating natural movement throughout the session.

What makes my approach different is that I don’t believe family photography should feel overly staged or stressful. With years of experience photographing families, couples, and weddings in California and Hawaii, I’ve learned how to create an experience where people feel genuinely comfortable enough to be themselves.

I pay close attention to each family’s dynamic and personalities so the session feels natural, personalized, and emotionally connected rather than forced or templated.

For many parents, the biggest concern is whether the kids will cooperate or enjoy the experience. My goal is to remove that pressure entirely and create a session that feels relaxed, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone involved. Instead of focusing on perfectly posed portraits, I focus on creating space for real connection, movement, and authentic moments that truly reflect this season of your life together.
